In
1968, film director Stanley
Kubrick completed his science fiction masterpiece,
2001:
A Space Odyssey. In the film, the spaceship Discovery
set out on a mission to the planet Jupiter, seeking answers to
the mysterious black monolith recently dug up on Earth's moon.
The Discovery crew consisted of 5 humans (3 of whom rested in a
state of suspended animation), and an on-board computer, HAL 9000,
controlling every aspect of the Discovery's function – including
its 3 EVA Pods. Ever since his appearance, HAL has represented
the "gold standard" of AI: attaining human-like intelligence
in a machine.
Below are photos of a 1/12 scale replica
of the EVA Pod. This Pod rests on a custom-made display base. (Contact MLU for more information.)
