The Intelligence Squared Debate - Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry vs. The Catholics

Is the Catholic church a force for good in the world? "It stands up for the oppressed and offers spiritual succour to billions say the Church's supporters. But what about the Church's teachings on condoms, gays and women priests, ask the detractors."
Almost every argument delivered in favour of the Catholic Church was logically fallacious or vacuous (anything from flannelling, through non-sequiturs to cover-ups). I expected that from Widdicombe, I suppose, but still, the quality of argument on that side was really quite pathetic. I find it hard to believe that people of their intelligence and education should be so incompetent so I put it down to deliberate sophistry. And so, it seems did the audience - that was quite a remarkable shift of opinion. I wonder if any of the nuns changed their mind...
Fascinating
