Charles Darwin film 'too controversial for religious America'

A British film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer.

The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere on Sunday. It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia. However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.

for everybody outside the US. The idea that every layman can choose which part of science he/she accepts and which not, e.g.
- evolution no, geography, in as far as it leads to the discovery of oil, yes,
- cosmogony no, gerontology yes -
is outright foolish. Science these days is a complexly interwoven system based on consistent results from all the different disciplines. Either you accept the system as a whole, or you don't.
Every drop of offshore oil, every TV set - even those showing Pat Robertson - every mobile phone, every website is based on that science. Of course you can Amish out - a personal lifestyle decision.
But a fundamentalist on TV is an abomination. He frankly makes use of a technology based on the fundamental assumption that everything can be explained without an ever interfering god. If a fundy's car breaks down, he won't pray but call a mechanic...
